Richardson Crime Prevention Update - August 2008

On-Line Reporting
A new tool on our website allows citizens to file certain reports on-line now. Click on THIS LINK and you enter into the application at that point. You can file four kinds of reports under certain conditions, so make sure you read the instructions--- Lost Property, Vehicle Burglary, Theft, and Vandalism. If you lose the link you can always go the Police Department section of cor.net and access it there.

VIN Etching Event
Also, a free V.I.N etching event is scheduled for Thursday, September 18th, from 9 AM - 2 PM, on one of the parking lots at Cisco Systems located at the N.E. corner of Jupiter Rd and Renner Rd. The North Texas Auto Theft Task Force is back in the etching business, so take advantage of this free service for which vendors typically charge several hundred dollars. Etching your vehicle's V.I.N. on all windows and doors is a deterrent to theft and can qualify you for a discount on your comprehensive auto insurance premium. H.E.A.T. registrations will be available, but will not be a priority as they can now be done on-line. If you do want to register your vehicle in the H.E.A.T. program, your vehicle should have permanent plates (paper buyer tags cannot be registered) and should be registered in your / spouse's name, with proof of insurance and your Texas DL. Rain date is September 25th, same time, same location.

Possible Produce Vendor Scam
Recently, a Richardson resident answered the door to find a woman and several young men peddling crates of fruit. The vendors talked their way inside with the crates, asked for a drink, used the phone, then charged the resident more than the agreed price for the fruit. A Dallas resident called to report she also had been victimized in a similar scam. She, too, had allowed the vendors into her home. It sounds like the vendors are charging three to four times market price for their produce, and are intimidating seniors to pay just to get them out of their homes. So, 1) be wary of solicitations at the door, 2) do not allow strangers into your home, and 3) if you feel you are being pressured or bullied, call 9-1-1 to get police on the way.
