State Representative Angie Button's Legislative Update - August 2009

I hope everyone is having a great summer. With the start of the school year right around the corner, I would like to remind everyone that Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 21, 22 and 23 - the state's annual tax holiday. As in previous years most clothing and footwear priced under $100 are exempt from sales and use taxes, which could save you about $8 on every $100 spent. The exemption during the sales tax holiday includes backpacks and messenger bags. For the first time this year as a result of the passage of HB 1801, most school supplies are exempt as well. For an extended list of what is tax exempt, please visit: http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490_list.html.

Economic Development Award

July 16th, I was awarded the Texas House Republican Caucus' Innovator for Economic Development Award for my focus on a strong, independent, and thriving Texas economy during the 81st legislative session.

As many of you know, promoting legislation that has a positive impact on job creation, job retention, and workforce development is my top priority. I am honored that the Republican Caucus chose to acknowledge me in this way.

According to Republican Caucus Chair, Representative Larry Taylor, "Rep. Button's invaluable business expertise shined. As a freshman legislator she easily managed the steep learning curve and impressed senior members with her thorough knowledge and understanding of the economic issues facing Texas. This honor is well deserved and the people of District 112 should take pride in their State Representative."

I credit a large part of my success during the 81st legislative session to the Garland and Richardson Chambers of Commerce and the insights gained from my constituent Roundtable meetings. Through open dialogue and honest feedback, we worked together to move Texas forward.

Around the District

This has been a busy month. I was honored to have the opportunity to speak at and to attend many events. I always appreciate the opportunity to discuss ways we can work together for our community. If you would like me to provide a legislative update or if you would like to discuss ways we need to improve our community and state, I would love to hear from you.

Currently, in conjunction with my Senior Roundtable volunteers, I am planning Senior Awareness day for the people of Garland and Richardson. This event will be an informative event with special guests to provide resources and information affecting the lives of senior citizens. Senior Awareness Day is scheduled for October 24th so mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Representative Button addressed the group at lunch discussing the importance of economic development in our state. At dinner, Rep. Button introduced keynote speaker, Governor Rick Perry.

Additionally this month, I had the opportunity to speak at the Garland Rotary Club. I appreciate the wonderful things our community service organizations do to make our community such a great place to call home.

I am honored to serve you in the Texas House of Representatives. Please express your views on any issue that is important to you and I assure you, I will take your views and the views of every constituent in District 112 into consideration.

Sincerely,
Angie Chen Button
