State Farm will reinforce its ongoing commitment to child passenger safety by hosting free child seat inspections this Saturday in Richardson, TX. At this event, parents will be educated about the importance of properly buckling up kids. These events focus on the significance of infant seats, booster seats and seat belts for children riding in motor vehicles.
This event is timely, since effective September 1st SB 61 amends the existing statute regarding child passenger safety seats. The bill requires that any child younger than 8 years of age be restrained in an approved child passenger safety seat unless the child is taller than 4 feet, 9 inches in height. The fine is no more than $25 for a first offense and $250 for a second offense.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of accidental death of children over age 1 in the United States. Statistics show that many of these tragedies could be avoided through appropriate safety restraint use. Four out of five car seats are used improperly.
State Farm is hosting several other Chile Safety Seat inspection events throughout the state. State Farm-hosted events resulted in 2,200 child seat inspections last year. State Farm has fostered an ongoing research partnership with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia called Partners for Child Passenger Safety (PCPS). This joint effort represents the largest study ever conducted in the world of children in motor vehicle crashes.
More information on the new laws can be found at the Texas Department of Public Safety website.
